Task 3: School Day of Non-violence and Peace

Hi everyone!

Here you have your third task, just in time to celebrate the School Day of Non-violence and Peace. You may know that January is a month closely related to peace, hosting the anniversary of the death of Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr.‘s birthday.

The latter was inspired by the former, and he became the most influential American activist in the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. In 1963, he delivered his famous speech “I have a dream”, in front of the Lincoln Memorial, in the heart of Washington. This speech is full of emotion and poetry, and I would love to enjoy it together with all of you.

TASK – What do I have to do?

  • You will receive in class or by email a part of the speech.
  • Find your excerpt in the speech using the transcript (download it here).
  • Listen to the speech in the video below while you read the transcript and try to write down the intonation for your excerpt.
  • Practice reading it aloud until you do sound great!
  • RECORD your voice reading your excerpt. Check that it sounds perfect. Repeat if needed. (You can use your mobile!)
  • SEND me the audio file, and include a TRANSLATION of your excerpt. Remember to read it after writing to make sure the translation makes sense in Spanish!
  • THAT’S IT!!

I have a dream that my wonderful students will achieve a great level of English!!

And this is the final result! Good job, everyone!!

Task 2: Humans of New York

Dear students,

For this task I want you to get to know a wonderful project which is called “Humans of New York”. It began as a photography project, and its goal was to portray a sample of the inhabitants of New York. The project grew and it has evolved into a series of stories about people all over the world. For each person, you will find a picture and a caption which explains the person’s story. There are all sorts of stories: romance, adventures, regrets, hopes for the future… I hope you enjoy working on this task.

What you have to do:

  • Explore HONY webpage or Facebook page.
  • Find four different stories that capture your attention (microfashion excluded).
  • REWRITE the stories using your own words. Summarise them and include the reason why you chose that person.
  • WRITE your own “Humans of Pinos Puente” story (100 words), including a picture of yourself to accompany the text. Remember to write the text in first person singular: I grew up in Pinos Puente
  • Send the texts to my email for checking. You can rewrite and resubmit as many times as you need to improve your grade.

DEADLINE:

  • Tuesday, 19th November 2019.

Have fun and enjoy your bank holiday weekend!!

Task 1: High School Students Pose As Pop Heroes On Hilarious IDs, Rock The Internet

A Michigan high school urged seniors, as it does every year, to dress as pop heroes for their photo IDs. Students were up to the challenge ― and the IDs blew up the internet.

Students at North Farmington High School, in the Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills, posted photos or images of their actual chosen pop hero on Twitter next to their IDs — with funny catchphrases. There were lots of cartoon characters, including Woody from “Toy Story” (“There’s a snake in my boot”), Krusty Krab of “Spongebob Squarepants,” Princess Fiona and Peppa Pig.

** TASK **

To win a FREE HOMEWORK PASS, you can make your own ID card here with a creative picture of yourself and your catchphrase. You have until September 30th to post the card in twitter, facebook or instagram with the hashtag #PinosID1920 to win!

AND/OR

If you don’t feel like taking pictures, you can write a comment here, giving a definition of the vocabulary terms underlined in the text. You will have to write a sample sentence for each term as well to pass this task.

Have fun!
